The audible charms and eccentricities of classic tine and pickup electric pianos are utilised and brought under the control of the player as never before. mid Reminded me of my old Pianet T, which I played through an elderly Selmer 100 watt valve head (turned up to eleven, of course) and a 4x12 speaker cab with a couple of torn cones. The resulting overdrive and feedback blotted out three guitars and drums leaving just me and the bass in a body pummelling groove. I thought that sound was lost in time, but it’s possible once more and at much lower volumes with the Prepared Pianet. Whacked out opportunities abound, from evolving electronics, snappy acoustics and indescribable musical tones and frequencies. There are huge flappy marching band bass drums, ripped and rattly snares and kicks, frame drums, congas, bongos, toms, hi-hats, cymbals, boxes, broken metal shelving… Plus the “prepared” steel drums. These are a neglected set of bass and cello steel pans played with fingers and soft mallets to avoid sounding like proper steel drums (more apocalypse than calypso), the tunings are a bit iffy, but there are plenty of velocity layers per hit for a rusty hang drum like effect. Great for making wonky, dusty beats, chunky acoustic EDM or even epic film scoring.
