PLATO is the melodic counterpart to brutish percussion box HOBBES . Like its philosophical namesake, PLATO is open minded and inspirational, but at it's core it is dark, very dark : ).  It is a groundbreaking ideas machine for inventing your own genres.  Deep cinematica, beautiful ambient dronescapes, skittering minimalism, melodic rhythm shadows and seductively brutalized grind is in there along with the gorgeous tones of hybrid acoustics rubbing along nicely together.

PLATO is built around a network of subtle to dramatic interactions; sounds, frequencies, transients, levels and effects can all  interact with each other in surprising ways. It is an instrument you try and steer. Fortunately the complex stuff is under the hood,  you use the intuitive GUi to wrangle new ideas and bend new sounds without getting bogged down with details. Merge and melt the unexpected into ravishing new music with a daft grin on your face.​...​​​​​​​​

This really has been a labour of love and is based on two interlocking thoughts.

  •  what if everything had an effect on everything?

  •  what if every note could do different stuff ?

So...

  • the signal flow gubbins is like a wobbly Jenga, add a bit more of one thing and the centre might not hold - but in a good way. The 4GB of pianos, strings and flutes are semi irrelevant, they are sonic placeholders with a job to do in different parts of the frequency and transient spectrums. They all get smurged (I just invented that word) through the effects and feedback/forward loops inside and come out changed, changed for the better.

  • a different sequencer on every note leads to endless possibilities: rate, steps, swing and randomness can be different for each - or they can all be the same. It became too overwhelming to make snapshots because with that much freedom when do you stop ? So there are 100 starting points to kick you into your own explorations.

PLATONIC FORMS refill

In the future , new PLATO experiments (let's call them refills) will occasionally pop up. They are refills because they use the PLATO engine and you need to own PLATO to get them, they will be low cost and involve new combinations of forgotten gems of the Sound Dust repertoire.

But before that, in the spirit of Platonic theory we start with the basics. The first PLATO refill is constructed from new recordings of single oscillator triangle, saw, fat square and thin square waveforms from my MOOG VOYAGER. 

It comes as a free extra when you get PLATO - and future refills will only be available to owners of PLATO.
