Knitted from the sounds of early drum synthesis and the cheap, slightly wonky technology that helped make some of the great records of the late 70s and early 80s. Rebellious Beat Box brings together 50 kits built from real and hybrid gear - CR78, 707, 606, 909, Minipops, Optigan, Linn and more - mixed with complementary sounds from modular and analogue hardware.
Everything is squashed through my ancient Roland Space Echo 501. The preamp supplies the grit, and the repeats add patina and become part of the instrument. Echoes are split and mapped across the velocity range of each hit. Play hard for a cleaner, more direct hit; play softly and you travel deeper into the tape. Or reverse it - the second octave flips the velocity order.
The territory runs from early Rough Trade and Factory records, Martin Hannett, Throbbing Gristle, Joy Division, The Cure, Cabaret Voltaire, Fad Gadget and The Human League through to Burial and beyond to SOPHIE, Charli XCX, Slayyyter, Kim Petras and on into the future.

Flipped Velocity
Two octaves of sample mapping. The first behaves normally, higher velocity = cleaner sounds. The second octave flips the order, higher velocity = more tape generations.
Two velocity modes.
VEL > LINEAR = 'normal' velocity layers
VEL > 2-LEVEL = select volume and sample choice for soft and hard hits.
